Canterbury Christ Church University

Canterbury University aim to “transform individuals, creating knowledge, enriching communities and building a sustainable future”.

In collaboration with Xtratherm and Jablite, TaperedPlus have supplied a hybrid EPS and PIR Tapered Insulation for their new £60 million Science, Technology, Health Engineering and Medicine building.

During the design phase, many amendments were made to the proposed scheme to accommodate construction design constraints regarding fall requirements and upstand height limitations.

During the construction phases, further issues were encountered, including outlet position relocations and numerous slab penetrations for on roof services. These changes led to TaperedPlus redesigning the Tapered scheme. “All of this was carried out in full cooperation with both of the main and installing contractors, and always keeping within budget constraints, whilst still achieving all performance requirements of the installed system” (Steve Boden, Key Accounts Manager at TaperedPlus Ltd).

The scheme was 3853m2 in total, therefore was split into 8 call-off’s in order to cause minimum disruption to the University.

The University aims to update the campus whilst complementing the history of their location on a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This particular building “references the visual link from St Martin’s Church to Canterbury Cathedral over St Augustine’s Abbey, creating a new heart to North Holmes Campus and links between the University’s key buildings”.
