Cambridge Mosque

The Cambridge Central Mosque cost £23 million to build and is “dedicated to the spiritual and social welfare of the city’s estimated six thousand Muslims”. Their mandate is to “meet the needs of the Muslim community in the UK and beyond by facilitating good practice in faith, community and development, social cohesion and interfaith dialogue”.

The materials were supplied in call-offs to coincide with the work schedule on site. Moy Materials commented that they used “the Paralon Total Roof System, under [their] uniquely designed, acoustic, tapered insulation scheme”.

The Mosque is “Europe’s first eco-friendly mosque and the first purpose-built mosque within the city of Cambridge”, with a solar-powered generator on the roof, passive ventilation and water recycling facilities. It achieved better than Part L Building Regulation requirements for thermal insulation and airtightness. The EPC rating is A, meaning it’s incredibly close to being a zero-carbon building, honouring the Islamic civilization’s ideology regarding the rejection of waste.
